How to start praying

Learning to talk to God is essential for christian growth, but often something we find intimidating. How do we pray? What do we say? Where do we begin? Every healthy relationship needs healthy communication. Prayer is our means of healthy communication with God and because we believe so much in the power of prayer, we’ve put together a few helpful tips to help you start talking to God.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’” Luke 11:1-4

  1. Acknowledge Who God Is To You

The scriptures describe God as “Father, Savior, Lord, King, and Master”. When you begin praying, allow your heart to grow in reverence for who God is to you. Focus on your heart before you focus on the words. “Father, may your name always be kept holy.” (Luke 11:2)

”Dear God, thank you for being the King of my life and heart. There is no one like you in all the earth and no name is as great as your name. Today, I begin by worshiping you as the one who is control of everything. You are on the throne and I choose to follow you with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength.”

  2. Give Thanks

Thank God for WHO he is as well as WHAT he has done. If this is difficult, thank him for the gift of salvation and for sending Jesus to save you from your sins. He is loving, faithful, kind, patient, and gracious to you. Simply say thank you. Offer thanksgiving for a new day, for breath in your lungs, for his provision in your life, for your family, etc. There is always something to give God praise for and in verbalizing and acknowledging these things, you are worshiping Him. “But You, O Lord, are a God who protects and is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness and truth.” Psalm 86:15

”Dear God, thank you for being a good Father. Thank you for sending Jesus and making a way for me to have right relationship with you. I’m so thankful for salvation and that you have forgiven me! I’m thankful for so much today…the ability to get out of bed, to breathe, and how you have provided for me. Thank you.”

  3. Ask For Forgiveness

We sin everyday. Complaining, arguing, resentment, the zinger you secretly wish you had said earlier in the day…it’s easy to see how different we are than a perfect and holy God. Thank Jesus for what He has done for you by living the perfect life on your behalf. Ask for forgiveness and turn away from sinful patterns. That can feel impossible but with God all things are possible! “Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.” (Luke 11:4)

”Dear God. Thank you for the gift of forgiveness. I know I have sinned against you and am eternally thankful for Jesus and what He has done for me. Today, I specifically ask for forgiveness for (specifically name what you need forgiveness from) and turn away from it. Today, I choose you.”

  4. Ask For Help

Jesus prays to his “Father in heaven.” God is our Father and loves to take care of us. Bring your needs to him in prayer. Many people feel unworthy asking God for anything, but He is a good Father, desiring to meet our needs. Maybe it’s healing, a deeper relationship with Him, a new job, direction, or simply peace…God can do it. Just ask! Furthermore, God loves it when you ask on behalf of other people as well. Pray for your friends and family, your boss, governmental leaders, etc. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:5-7)

”Dear God, I thank you that you are good and gracious to me. You love me and care about my needs and have the strength and power to change everything. Would you move powerfully today? I ask that you would meet my needs (ask specifically what you need God to do) and bless me today. I love you and am forever grateful for how you provide for me.”

We pray you would take your next steps in relationship with God through prayer today! We realize there are far more ways to pray and far more things to pray about than what we have provided, but we believe this will help serve as a much needed foundation for a daily prayer life.
